"The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before." President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

2014 Families Are Forever Primary Activity

I have the wonderful opportunity to serve as a Primary President in the LDS church. I love serving the young children of our neighborhood!  They are truly a delight.  The theme for 2014 is Families Are Forever.  With that theme in mind, I wanted to have a family centered activity for the children.  What we planned was a Primary Family Home Evening.

I will try to give you just simple details of the activity using the pictures I took of our activity:

We invited all primary aged children (Sunbeam class - Valiant 11) and their parents to attend.  As they entered the room, each family entered our Door Prize Drawing. We had 7 door prizes that they could win. Then we asked them to sit as a family at the table.
We made a mini living room using the furniture from the church.  Great Idea!!  This is where we asked our guest speakers to sit for the activity.  We opened our activity by me welcoming everyone, having an opening prayer and a song.  I then talked for a minute about this years theme for Primary and read this years scripture in Malachi.  I then turned the time over to our wonderful Bishopric for the lesson part of our activity.  A few weeks prior I had asked each of them to just take 5 minutes each and gave each of them a topic to speak on.  The 3 topics were, Family Home Evening, The Family: A Proclamation to the World, and a talk by Elder Ballard called That The Lost May Be Found.  This lesson part of the activity was so wonderful and really set the tone for the purpose of our activity.
When the lesson was finished, that is when my 1st counselor got up and explained the activity part of our Family Home Evening.  We had each family make a Family Conversation Jar that they could take home at the end of the activity.  I used the idea from this website and all the questions were just perfect!!  Our decorations were simple and fun.  Red velvet Ribbon (thank you Christmas Clearance) and conversation hearts for them to much on while sitting at the tables. (and yes, they were all eaten!!) Get it, conversation hearts for family conversation!!  :)
My husband made the table flag stands out of a 2x4 piece of wood and I painted them.
Making the Family Conversation Jars:  We had everything set out, ready to go for easy assembly.  Each mason jar already had the tag tied to the jar, we made copies of all the questions (back to back so each piece of paper had a question on either side.  We did this to cut down on the amount of paper and cutting time).  A pair of scissors for each family, a lid and a piece of fabric just to make them a little more appealing.
We had typed up simple step by step instructions and hung those behind the table.  This way they could just read and follow the directions and we did not have to explain it 100+ times.
(we are working with children, remember) Each family sent up 2 people to the table to get their supplies.
At the end of the table we had a sample of what the jar looked like when completed.  Each family sat and assembled their own jars, talked and really had an enjoyable time.  But that wasn't all.
As they were assembling their jars, that is when we drew names for the 7 door prizes (that are explained below).  When each family finished their jar, they came up to a separate table that we had set up by our living room and picked a gift bag (found at Hobby Lobby) that had this Family Home Evening chart inside.  We had also included several clothes pins as well. (family names can be written on each clothes pin and that is what you use to clip to the chart and assign and switch out the prayer, song, lesson etc each week). Each family then put their jar inside their bags to help protect it so it would not get dropped on their way home. Just after calling the names for the door prizes we ended our activity with a prayer and a blessing on the treats.  That way those that needed to go could go and those that like to visit could stay and visit.
Every Family Home Evening needs a TREAT!  My 2nd counselor makes amazing chocolate chip cookies!  She made all of them for our activity.  So I had fun and added this sign to the dessert table.  I also dipped jumbo marshmallows in chocolate.  Kid friendly desserts are a must!!
Do you see those 7 frames on our dessert table?!  Those were the door prizes.  They also worked well for our dessert table decorations.  Each printable I found online for FREE and just had 5x7 prints made of each one at walmart.  I also found the 97 cent frames at walmart too!!  score! Each family that received one loved them.  Each print had a gospel message about families.  My hope is that they were taken home and hung on their wall or put on display somewhere.

Now, we also handed out a very special gift to each family as they left the activity.  Each family received their own copy of this CD.  It's a wonderful CD with 2014 Primary Songs on it.
There was nothing that I would not have changed about this activity except adding a copy of the Family Proclamation to each gift bag.  Everything went so smooth and we were so grateful to all the families that came out and supported it.  It was wonderful, even for me and my family!

LDS Primary 2014 Birthday Gifts

I currently serve as the Primary President in the LDS church.  I over see the children ages 18 months - 11 years old.  I love this calling!  For the 2014 year the theme is: Families Are Forever.
We wanted the birthday gifts for the children to center around this wonderful theme so this is what all of the children, including the nursery age children and all the Primary teachers will receive from the Primary Presidency.
A 4x6 copy of the Proclamation of the Family to keep in their scriptures
(I found the Proclamation Printable in this etsy shop!  She was wonderful to work with and made me a custom listing for the 4x6 size. Even at that small of a size, the words are so clear and readable!!)
also included is a small treat
I bought pkg of candy right now since bulk is cheapest around Halloween time, balloon gift bags, ribbon and 100+ copies of the Proclamation the the Family. (colors include blue, pink, white, brown)
Tied them all up and they are ready to go.

Re-purpose knit pants into Summer Capri's

When money is tight, and your kids grow faster then you like, and they are rough on their clothes during the summertime......just re-purpose them back into functional clothes again! I took several pairs of my girls pants that had become to short for pants and cut them off at the bottom to make capri's.
Since these were all knit, I did an easy zigzag technique on the sewing machine to ruffle the new hems of the capri's.  They were all finished in less then 30 minutes!  So glad they can still wear them!

Lalaloopsy Cake

My daughter turned 6 this past week!  I can not believe where the time is going!!
She requested a Lemon Cake this year as well as a Lalaloopsy Cake so this is what I made for her:
2 Yellow straws and a paper banner with Lalaloopsy's on them.
Fast and Simple and so cute too......she was very pleased.
It was a Lemon Cake with a Strawberry filling in the middle.
The leftover Easter Sixlets were the perfect colors to finish off the cuteness for the top.

Easy Last Minute Game ideas for Classroom Valentine's Party

I am in charge of the Valentine's Day classroom activities in my daughters kindergarten class.
Thanks to some ideas that I found on Pinterest, I was able to put together a couple of fun games and activities for the kids.

Pin the lips on the teacher:
found this idea HERE as well as the lip printable.
I decided to put the teacher's faces on a poster and then laminated it.
One side has a girl teacher,
the other side has a guy teacher.

Cupid's Arrow Practice:
 found this idea HERE.
I changed it up a bit by making a poster with three different sized heart cutouts that the kids can shoot the arrows (Q-tips) threw. You simply put a q-tip in a straw and have the kids blow on the end of the straw and the q-tip shoots out.

Color your Mustache/Lips: Class Photo Idea
with lips and mustaches being so popular right now I thought this would be fun for the kids.  I drew up lips and mustaches and copied them onto white card stock.  Each kid can color and cut out their shapes and tape them to a straw.  I plan to take a whole class picture with the students and the teacher in these.  It's also a fun take home project for them too.

Boy and Girl Classroom Valentines

My oldest is in Kindergarten.  I wanted something fun and simple for her to hand out to her classmates. And since I am the room mom and will be doing the class party....they needed to be simple.
How does $1.00 sound?!?  yep, thanks to some awesome free printables and a package of small erasers from Target, that is all these cost me.  I had the little baggies on hand already.

Mini Heart Pillows: So many uses

I made up a bunch of these mini heart pillows to use for Valentine's Day.
I plan to do several things with them:
*place them all over the house and have a scavenger hunt with the kids
*hide them in fun places for my husband to find...so he knows how much I love him
*send one to loved ones who live far away
*they make sweet little pillows for your kids dolls
*leave on the doorstep of a neighbor
I just simply drew a heart shape, traced it onto my fabric, sewed around it leaving a small opening to fill with batting then I used liquid stitch to close them up.  Fast and easy!  A great way to use up fabric scraps!

Valentine's Day Envelopes: The Tutorial

I first posted these Valentine's Day Envelopes for my family in This Post a few days ago.
I have since had a few emails asking me for a tutorial, so here it is:

Here is what you need: 1 sheet of stiff felt for each envelope (hobby lobby), some fabric ( 1/4 yard is great for 2 envelopes), ribbon, sewing machine and thread, heat n bond for letters is optional.

First, make a lid shape.  I simply folded a piece of paper the shape I wanted.  Trace around the lid shape on to your fabric that is folded right sides together.

After you trace them onto your fabric, pin the fabric.  You are going to now get ready to sew.
Make sure to mark an opening.... you will not sew in between these markings.  This is so you can turn your fabric inside out.
Sew right on top of the lines....this way your envelope lid is the exact size you need it to be!  Just make sure to leave an opening. Cut out your lid.
Turn your lid inside out so your fabric is right sides out.  Press with an iron.  Now would be a good time to add any embellishments that you want....name or letter using heat n bond. You will now sew all around the lid part.

Once you have that sewn (look closely), you can now pin the lid to your stiff felt like this below.

Sew 2 lines....one on the bottom and then one towards the top of your felt.  This gives it a nice finished look.
To add ribbon, pin it like below.  I cut my ribbon to around 24".   Sew the ribbon in place; back stitching a few times.

I then cut out a couple of small squares of felt scraps and sewed them the the backs for a nice finished look.  I then folded up my stiff felt and I sewed up along the 2 sides like pictured.

There you have it, all finished!

I hope that helps those of you who wanted to make some!
